Guest Scientist Visa for Research Opportunities in Germany

This page is dedicated to individuals seeking opportunities to work as Guest Scientists or Visiting Scholars in the Federal Republic of Germany and are in need of a Guest Scientist Visa.

Required Documents for a Guest Scientist Visa/ Visiting Scholar Visa

  1. Fully completed application form & declaration duly signed.
  2. Two passport photographs (strict requirements, see this page for details).
  3. Valid national passport, issued within the last 10 years and with at least 12 months validity left after the scheduled return.
  4. 1 copy of your passport’s data page (A4 size copy).
  5. A confirmation letter from your health insurance stating coverage for emergency medical or hospitalization with a minimum of 30,000 Euros.
  6. Flight reservation, rail tickets, others.
  7. Proof of accommodation for your entire stay in the Schengen area
  8. Personal covering letter explaining the purpose of your stay in Germany.
  9. No-objection letter of your local university/research institute.
  10. Invitation letter from German university/research institute confirming conditions of your stay in Germany, including payment (scholarship).
  11. Proof of academic qualification (academic degree certificate or mark sheets).
  12. Proof of civil status: Marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse.

Where and How to Apply for a Guest Scientist/Visiting Scholar Visa

You should apply at your home country’s German Embassy. First-time applicants have to submit the application form along with the required documents in person. Frequent travelers may submit their application and documents via an agent or a travel agency.

Important Notes

  • It is recommended you apply for a visa at least 3 weeks before your travel date to meet any processing delays.

Paying the Visa

Applicants have to pay the visa fees by a bank transfer. Check’s or credit cards are not accepted. The money order must be in the name of the Consulate in your home country and not be older than two months. The cost of a visa as of 2008 is 60 Euro.

  • All documents need to be presented in the given order in the original. Should you wish to keep any original, kindly provide a copy (A4 size). Please DO NOT staple any documents.
  • The German Missions reserve the right to ask for additional documents or personal appearance for an interview in some cases. Submission of the above-mentioned documents does not guarantee that a visa is granted. Submission of incomplete documentation or refusal to appear for a visa interview may result in the rejection of your application.
