What are the dark sides of MS in Germany?

Dark sides of MS in Germany: I’m not going to call it so much as a “dark side” as much as short comings. Here are my thoughts:

Duration

When you compare MS in Germany with MS in the U.S., the duration is longer in Germany. In most of the universities, you have to write a Master Thesis in order to obtain a degree. It’s not optional. I have seen people do multiple internships and take a long three to four years before their master’s here.

Examination

This point is mainly valid for technical/engineering courses. I cannot speak for any other course. Examinations are tough and needs a lot of preparation. And in some subjects, you are expected to write how the Professor has pointed it in his presentations.

Mostly because, if you write complicated answers in your own words( especially English) the evaluator may not always want to spend time reading and understanding it. This is only for some cases and not all. If you’re used to being spoon fed everything, then this is not the place for you. Your university and professor expects you to be more independent and after all you’re doing a Master’s degree.

Language

You must’ve already seen this coming. It’s very important that you learn German and speak. Especially, if you’re planning to work in a manufacturing industry where you’ve to deal with German workers and German clients.

Even otherwise, if you’re planning to work in Germany after your master’s here, your employer expects at least you speak basic German. Most of the Germans depending on the city you live, can speak some English but it’s advisable to learn some german beforehand to make your life easier and understand the culture better.

Weather

German winter is harsh and if you’re coming from a place where it doesn’t go below 15 degrees, it can be initially tough to adjust. It gets dark around 4:00 PM. I’ve seen this weather causing depression to students in certain cases. The summers are pleasant and sunny. But this summer it was a bit unpleasant with two heat waves.

Food

If you’re a vegetarian from India like me, it would be difficult for you. Of course there are a number of Indian restaurants where you could eat; but as a student you may not find it affordable. Also, if you’re in a small town there are again very less option. I’d suggest you to learn at least basic cooking to survive. However, you get all the spices and vegetables that you find in India. Well, at least most of them.

These are some of the disadvantages. However, the pros outweigh the cons and is totally worth pursuing a master’s degree.
